SITUATION Bowling centre design unacceptable PETERHEAD Bowling Club have had the design for their proposed indoor bowling centre rejected by the planning committee of Banff and Buchan District Council. Reporting to the committee, director of planning, Mr Peter Suttie said that the design and finish of the proposed building was not acceptable to the district council’s planning department, and that the complex would be no different from what could be found on an industrial site. The local bowling club wish to create a new building for indoor bowling near the existing outdoor greens by Queen Street, but following Mr Suttie’s deferral, the club will have to wait until September for a decision on planning consent.

New bowling club ‘ – , – monstrosity’ rejected with deep regret PETERHEAD Bowling Club has been refused permission to build an indoor bowling complex near Queen Street, by Banff and Buchan planning committee. Planning consent was refused for the “industrial-style” development at the Thursday meeting of the planning committee, when planning director, Mr. Peter Suttie, gave a report of his findings and recommendations. The director said the proposal was for a very large indoor bowling Sacility which would neighbour the outdoor greens currently at the site. However, despite discussions between the bowling club and the planning department about how the building’s appearance could be improved, the end result was “unacceptable for the area it would be situated in”’. Fraserburgh councillor, Mr. lan Tait described the design as a “monstrosity” and Mr. Suttie referred to it as “not really architecture”. LARGER After viewing specially created pictures of the present site with super-imposed designs of the proposed structure, the councillors were even more concerned about the size of the building which would be substantially larger than any of the council’s current industrial factories. The unanimous opinion of the committee was that they welcomed such a development, but under no circumstance could the council support such a large design of building. “I could not recommend anything but refusal of this particular proposal,” said Mr. Suttie. Councillor Brian Munro, presiding, said: “I’m sure we all feel we would like to see this indoor bowling facility at Peterhead, but not the plan as submitted.” The application was rejected “with deep regret” by the committee.
